Blue Heron Whitewater is co-owned by three partners who have been guiding rafting trips on the French Broad River in North Carolina for over 25 years each. Though we all have experience on other rivers and with other occupations, this locally owned North Carolina whitewater rafting company calls the the French Broad River our home river, and our passion is sharing the beauty and history of the French Broad River with our guests.

 The Nature Center is one of the primary facilities in Western North Carolina offering school children and adults opportunities to learn about and develop an understanding of their responsibility for this area’s native wildlife and habitats.

The North Carolina Arboretum offers acres of cultivated gardens and groomed trails featuring some of the most beautiful, botanically-diverse plants in the region.

Seasonal Activities

Beech Mountain Ski Resort As the highest ski and snowboard area in the eastern US, ride 17 slopes on 95 acres. Find runs for every skill levels, with a vertical drop of 830 feet and 80+ inches of annual snow. The Alpine Village has ice skating, brewery and even a mountaintop bar. Snow tubing and terrain park. Ski vacation packages and lessons.

Cataloochee Ski Area, Maggie Valley Located at 5,400 ft. in the Great Smoky Mountains, their 18 slopes have 100% snowmaking with 5 lifts on 50 acres. Ski and snowboard rentals, packages, kids & adult school and nearby tubing park. Gentle slopes for novices while seasoned experts take on Upper Omigosh. Located 40 miles west of Asheville in scenic Maggie Valley.

Sapphire Valley Ski Resort Located near Cashiers, this small ski area is great for beginners and families, with a 1,600-ft. main run and a beginner slope. It's home to the Outhouse Races in February. Also, find a tube park, restaurant and zip lines. It's part of a larger resort with condo rentals and other amenities.

Wicked Weed sour & funky beers are served in a rustic pub with a barrel room & dog-friendly patio.

Highland Brewing offering free tours of its facilities plus a low-key taproom to sample a pint or flight. 

Sierra Nevada Tap Room is a stunning brewery tucked into the forest. Choose from 23 beers on tap. Sample southern-inspired small plates, fit fireside on the Back Porch, and hike the nature trail.
